Tip:  Invest in a financial calculator.
My recommendation is the Texas Instrument BAII Plus or the HP model.

Let me share a story with you about what I realized when I was looking to hire a "financial advisor."  You see, every time I was called upon by someone representing a financial services firm, I would start the screening process with two very simple and direct questions:

1.  Would you mind sharing with me your personal financial statement?
2.  Would you mind sharing with me your personal financial plan?

100% of the time in which I asked that question, there was obvious discomfort shown by the professional, and they often asked, "What does how I'm doing have to do with you?"

In my opinion, it meant the difference between my financial success and theirs.  My goal was to hire someone that was competent, disciplined, intelligent, honest, successful, and committed to helping me to accomplish my goals.
